St. Peter’s Church School is held from September through June in the rectory (the house next to the church). We offer Sunday School for all children ages 3 and up.
Children 3-7 years old:
Children & Worship (CAW) is offered for the younger elementary age children (3-7 year olds) at 10am in the Rectory (house next to the church) and is a multi-sensory approach to worship. CAW enables our children to not just learn about but experience God. It provides a special place for them to discover the ways and meaning of worship; to learn how to transform ordinary place and time into sacred place and time, how to discover the quiet place within themselves to listen and talk with God, and how to bring their experiences into dialogue with God in the biblical stories. Using visual materials, the Worship Leader shares the stories of the day and focuses attention on visual aids drawing the children’s attention to them. When the story is finished a “wondering session” occurs aloud, inviting the children to share their thoughts and feelings about what they have just heard. A response time of arts and crafts follows, and the children finish with the story being read directly from the Bible.
Elementary School Children
At 10 am our Older Elementary age children (8-11 years old) meet in the Rectory (the house next to the church) to study together as well. Each week the class will focus on the Gospel lesson and participate in some activities such as crafts, drama, and song to elaborate on and give them a deeper understanding of these important passages of the Bible.
- Torchbearers/Jr. Acolytes: Children ages 8 and up are invited to participate in the worship service by serving as Torchbearers or Junior Acolytes.
Middle School and High School Children
- Youth Group: The Youth Group meets monthly and is open to children in 6th grade and up. The group plans various trips and service projects throughout the year, with the focus on being together and having fun!
- Confirmation: The Rector will provide confirmation instruction for teens as preparation for reaffirming their baptismal vows and for making an affirmation of their adult responsibilities in the church. Confirmation is a rite in which we express faith and commitment to Christ and, by prayer and the laying on of hands by a bishop, receive strength from the Holy Spirit to continue in the life of faith and commitments.
The current Confirmation Class Schedule is January 16; February 13; March 13; April 3; May 15 and June 12. Each class will meet at the rectory from 11:30am – 1pm and is open for all youth who will be 14 or older in 2012. For more information, please contact the parish office.
Family Worship Sundays
St. Peter’s invites the children of the parish to lead worship on the fourth Sunday of every month. This service provides a chance for the members of the church to honor and celebrate the children of the parish. The children will serve in many of the jobs normally reserved for adults. They will serve as acolytes, cross bearers, greeters, ushers and lectors, often acting out the Gospel reading and leading the congregation in singing the anthem. A “child friendly” sermon is also a part of the service. On some Family Worship Sundays, instead of a sermon the Children and Worship leader will tell a Bible story after the Gospel reading, using songs, wooden figures, felt and other visual materials. The story concludes with a “wondering session” where the children provide their thoughts and responses to what they have just heard.
