The Spiritual Life Group
The Spiritual Life Group meets Wednesdays at 3 pm – 4:30 pm to read, discuss and be inspired by spiritual writers throughout Christian history. The group balances inward spiritual development with outward service to the church and the community.
The Spiritual Parenting Group
This group of parents meets once a month to discuss ways to create a more healthy, balanced and spiritual family life for each other and for our children. We discuss ways to nurture our children’s souls and strengthen their relationship with God, while trying to transform our family life from frenetic and frazzled to one with meaning, balance, spiritual growth, laughter and renewal. The meetings give us a chance to exchange ideas and provide support for each other. Each year we choose a book to read and help focus our discussions. Books the group has read over the years include:
- 10 Principles of Spiritual Parenting by Mimi Doe
- Busy but Balanced by Mimi Doe
- Peaceful Parents, Peaceful Kids by Naomi Drew
- Buddha never raised kids & Jesus didn’t drive carpool by Vickie Falcone
- Parenting with Fire by Shmuley Boteach
- Blessing of a Skinned Knee by Wendy Mogul
We meet at the St. Peter’s church rectory from 12:30 to 2:00 on the second Monday of the month, and new members are always welcome. For more information, please contact Ruth Portela at 973-535-3612.

The Healing Prayer Team
What is Healing Prayer?
Healing Prayer is offered by baptized Christians for anyone who seeks a prayer of healing for themselves or for others. Those offering healing prayer open themselves to be channels for God’s love. Those coming to receive healing prayer come with hearts open to receive God’s love and care. Healing is about being drawn to the heart of God.
Those in the congregation who desire prayers of healing for themselves or loved ones will be able to receive a prayer and, if they wish, a laying on of hands by members of the Healing Prayer team during the Eucharist.
What Happens in Healing Prayer?
Healing prayer is a place of vulnerability for both the person praying and the person receiving the prayer. Prayer may bring tears to you or to the persons praying for you. This is all right. Many have said that tears are a gift from God.
In healing prayer we open a space for God. We pray expectantly but not with particular expectations: sometimes we feel a sense of God’s presence, a warmth, a sense of peace. At other times we may not feel anything. Either way, through the prayer being offered, God’s love permeates our being and reaches our soul and the souls of those for whom we offer prayer. As with other sacraments, often it is only afterwards that we realize the gift of God in grace.
In healing prayer we are open to God’s love and care – and somehow God gathers up not only the persons receiving the prayer into God’s healing, but our whole community is scooped into God’s embrace.
